How to Open Our New Bags (and Why They’re Designed This Way)

We’ve had a few questions come through about our new bag design, so we wanted to explain both why the bags are designed this way and the easiest way to open them. We have also included a short video above that shows the process step by step.

As The Chaff Chaps, we are always aiming to balance practicality, product quality, and responsible packaging, while making sure the bags work well for everyday use on farm.

Why the Bag Is Designed This Way

Our new bags are part of the Ag Recovery Scheme, which means they are fully recyclable once you are finished with them. To meet those requirements, the bags use stitched construction rather than glued seams or tear strips, which can affect recyclability.

This design helps keep the bag strong during storage and transport, while also allowing it to go straight into recycling when empty.

The Best Way to Open the Bag

The easiest way to open the bag is to start by undoing the stitching at the top. Pull it free and move it out of the way.

Once that is done, lift the bag onto a stable surface such as a table or bench and keep the mouth of the bag facing forward.

Using a sharp knife, hold the bag tight and carefully cut down the length of the bag. You can stop part way if you are feeding as needed, or cut all the way down if you are filling a feed bin.

Opened this way, the product will flow cleanly and smoothly forward.

Why This Method Works Well

Cutting down the bag keeps its shape intact and allows the product to flow naturally rather than spilling out the sides.

This makes feeding easier and results in:

  • Better control when filling feed bins

  • Less mess and wasted product

  • A consistent, reliable flow

Recycling When You’re Done

Once the bag is empty, it can be placed straight into recycling through the Ag Recovery Scheme. No extra steps are required.
